Coming to a film festival near you...

Editing: an adventure in itself.  Team Powerhouse has hit the computers to begin drafting its documentary.  In the process, we developed a short trailer that provides a small glimpse of the project making it to the big screen at the film festival in May.  This is just a small taste of the food for thought provided by this documentary.  Stay tuned, and be on the lookout for the premier of the film at a local film festival near you...

In the beginning...

In the beginning, there were three social work students with an interest in social work and a desire to utilize the media as a means to raise awareness of topics that the general public may not be aware of.  The passion to use media as a catalyst for social change and conscious awareness culminated in Enrique Sandoval, Christie Reppart, and Aldo Benalcazar in forming TEAM POWERHOUSE.

Sports.  The word brings to mind images of athletes running in fields, teammates huddled together to raise spirits before a play, a tall basketball player poised in the air right before a slam dunk, a baseball player hitting the ball out of the field, and joyous atheletes embracing in victory.  Alternatively, images of teenagers in a court forming bonds and friendships while engaging in friendly competition comes to mind.  Ask anyone in the street what sports means to them, and you will hear words like: "competition," "teamwork," "spirit," "dedication," "determination," and "influential."

However, what happens when we ask people about stars like Kobe Bryant, or Tiger Woods, who came under the spotlight for engaging in philandering and infidelity?  Or when we ask them about the inevitable punches that hockey players throw at each other in the ice rink?  Or about the athlete who is able to escape criminal conviction due to his status as a football player?

And more or less, what happens when we ask people about the impact that sports has on the development of inner-city youth, forced to turn to sports in order to overcome the obstacles that life throws at them?  Is sports always a positive, life-enhancing protective buffer against the challenges of adolescence and poverty?  Or is it the setting for the development of potentially delinquent behaviors and near-narcissistic self-views?

This documentary is designed to do just that: to raise the public's awareness of the role that sports plays in influencing youth in ways that raises eyebrows and calls to attention the fact that for some atheletes, sports is not the image of a happy-go-lucky athlete being hoisted upon his teammates shoulders after a win, but the image of a troubled youth acting aggressively in the court and out while using status as an athlete as an excuse.

This documentary is controversial, yet necessary for the general public to view a balanced portrayal of sports and its influence on adolescents.  Watch it with an open mind, and derive your own conclusions afterwards.

Welcome, to the In Zone with Team Powerhouse!
